Called By Name

by - January 28, 2013

She greets me every Sunday, sometimes twice, because she forgets.
She kisses my cheek, holds my face between her cold hands, hugs me,
and says some of the few words she can still string together. "I love you."

Today, for our second greeting, she caught my eye across the room, came toward me and said, "Dawn."
A kiss, two hands, an embrace. I love you.

She called me by name.
I was unaware this had become no small thing.

But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel,
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name; you are Mine!
Isaiah 43:1

  1. This makes me think of my Father-in-law who lived with us the last 3 years while battling Alzheimer's. He called me by a different name almost every day. It was funny but sad but there was always love behind his words.
Thanks for sharing this. We lost him last week.

  2. I thought of the same verse and analogy when you posted that yesterday. Oh, to be called by name, that our names are written in the book of life. Sweet thoughts for such a tough illness. . .

  3. It does make a difference doesn't it, when someone speaks our name? Love that you have that blessing from someone continually. Love you Dawn.

  4. Being called by name...yes, that always means something. And even more when you realize the story behind it. Thanks for reminding us, Dawn, to use names when we talk to people, too. It matters.

  5. It almost went by me, as I read, the importance of you being called by name. And each of us, He calls us each by name, and never ever forgets... No small thing indeed!

  6. To hear God call me by my name is beautiful--even though I sometimes take it for granted. This is a good reminder to listen to His voice and to accept the blessing of Him using my name. Thank you, Dawn.

  7. A very special moment, Dawn--one that says much about you. You must have made an impression. What a difference it makes when we know our name is known.
